The Building Divisions function is to administer building codes in the unincorporated portion of Boulder County. The Boulder County Building Code is adopted by the Board of County Commissioners and consists of the following:

Effective January 1, 2008 all permits applications to the Boulder County Land Use Department, Building Safety and Inspections Services Division will be reviewed and inspected under the 2006 editions (unless otherwise noted) of the following International Code Standards:

  • International Building Code
  • International Plumbing Code
  • International Fuel Gas Code
  • International Residential Code
  • International Mechanical Code
  • International Energy Conservation Code.
  • National Electric Code (NEC) 2005

Note: The 2003 Amendments are available as reference for all building permits issued prior to the January 1, 2008 adoption of the 2006 Amendments. Please contact the Building Division for a copy of the 2003 Amendments.

Contractor Licensing

Effective July 1, 2008, the Boulder County Building Safety and Inspection Division will begin licensing contractors. General contractors, HVAC contractors, and roofing contractors require licensing through Boulder County. Electricians and plumbers must be state-licensed and registered with Boulder County.

Plumbers and electricians must have a state license. Building permits are mandatory regardless of the license.

Please Note: Effective July 1, 2008, Contractors in Boulder County are now required to be licensed through the Boulder County Building Safety and Inspection Division.
